How do i make a snow remover for solar panels?
If your solar panels are thermal and not photovoltaic then you can reverse the flow and use the heat from the storage tank and melt the snow off of the units.
Alternatively you can invest in a heliostat (a solar following mirror) that will increase the efficiency of the solar panel by directing more of the sun’s rays at the panel. A hemostat is usually more vertical than a solar panel as it tracks the sun and snow will more easily fall off of it. In this way you will use the sun to melt the snow off.
One of the reasons that solar panels are good located off the ground is that they are more easily cleaned and snow is removed. If your installation is up high then it is a good idea to also have a catwalk so that you can safely get up and remove the snow and clean them. (I would not install roof panels without a catwalk for this reason.)
Using heat tape can also be a good idea. But there are types made for outdoors to melt snow and ice off of a roof. If you will apply them to the exterior then make sure that it is not a type intended to be placed indoors. Most systems like this work best if they are on while the snow is falling.
So we have melting and physically removing. In the area of prevention there may be a way to physically cover them and then remove the cover. There may be a way to do this with with ropes from the ground. Another approach may be helpful if snow is predominately from one direction and you might create a “snow fence” that will create a micro environment where snow will build up robbing the snow from landing on the collectors.1
